Ernst uses writing to discuss the divide between the East and Western parts of the world; due to Western Civilization.
Ernst stated that Americans aren’t good at understanding other cultures. He stated that the defining characteristics of western civilization are set by the bible and philosophy. He also stated that it is no longer okay to not be educated in cultures, and ignorance is no longer acceptable.
“Americans are not very good at understanding other cultures”. This quote by him is grouping together all Americans. He stated that in general, Americans don’t care about other cultures enough to learn about them. This statement is very offensive to Americans and created a lot of discussion. He stated this in the beginning of his writing so it makes readers want to keep reading to see what else he has to say. He supports this claim by stating other languages that Americans do not know and how we stick to learning and speaking the same 3 languages. This claim affects a larger crowd because he grouped all Americans into it and said that no one is educated on other cultures.
