Question: How is color portrayed in this film?
Since the creation of color films, directors have made it a point to use as much color as possible. The decisions to make stuff stand out by color can be very significant in viewing the overall themes of a film. In the film, “The Thief of Baghdad,” the main thing I noticed was the use of color. There were many things that stood out to me about the characters, scene, actions, but color was the most important.
In general, bright colors can be used to represent happy things, and dark colors can be used to represent sad things. During the film, when the fighters rode on their horses and shot bow and arrows at the people, the clouds were dark and everything had a deep sense to it. When the princess came out in her carriage, a couple of seconds later, the town was back to bright and happy. This use of color sets the scene for what is to come and tells the readers a bigger story through symbols rather than explaining it verbally.
Color was portrayed as significant in this film. The hierarchy of people followed a color scheme. The important characters such as the princess and king wear bright colored clothes. The princess wears blue and the king wears red. Red and blue are 2 primary colors. The use of the color wheel in this film is very important in providing relevance to the power the king and princess hold in the culture. I wonder in what other ways color is used and viewed as significant in showing the audience themes, culture and symbolism.
